Please bring picnic lunch and your drink. ![]() Bare feet, flip-flops, slip-ons and thin-soled “beach shoes” are not acceptable!! You may wear your sturdy river shoes for the entire trip if you like. You’ll want to put on your river shoes so you can walk out into the shallow parts of the river to stroll through and touch the lilies which grow only in the water. Mixed upland hardwood species line ravines and the river's edge. The rolling uplands surrounding the river are forested with mountain longleaf and loblolly pines. Over seven miles of the Cahaba River lie within the Refuge boundary. These lilies are a sight to behold! In places, it often looks like it has snowed on the river in May. on Saturday, May 27 in order to give those who wish to participate in the lily walk during the day May 27 to also have sufficient time to prepare for and attend with other Southeastern Outings people the FREE outdoor Saturday evening concert by the Alabama Symphony Orchestra in Railroad Park that same evening. Also please note especially that we have changed the meeting time to one hour earlier, at 8:45 a.m. Please note that this is a rescheduling of the Cahaba lily walk originally scheduled for Saturday, May 20 and rescheduled to May 27 because of the high river water level on Saturday May 20. Whether using it literally or conceptually, each artist employs light’s profound influence or captures a playfulness that lights up the room. Together, these works reflect an expanse of contemporary artworks incorporating light and play. Fallah, and David Shrobe use color and lightheartedness to tell complex stories in their art. Debra Riffe’s prints from the series walk, in the direction you goin’ in tell a powerful story using silhouette forms, and the photographs of Chester Higgins, Manuel Álvarez Bravo, and Jerry Uelsmann creatively capture the playful whimsy of their subjects. Meanwhile, artists like Tayeba Begum Lipi, Kerry James Marshall, and Demond Melancon use the opulent effects of light interacting with shine and glitter to invite viewers into a serious dialogue. These galleries feature works by over thirty artists, including Afruz Amighi, Kumi Yamashita, and Harry Anderson, who incorporate light and shadows as a part of their art. These artworks transmit feelings of joy, whimsy, and wonder in both subtle and distinct ways.
